Cubone
Cubone is the most melancholy Pokémon in the original 151. It wears the skull of its deceased mother and cries at night for her. That lore was considered somewhat dark for a children's game when it was introduced in 1996 and remains one of the franchise's more resonant pieces of worldbuilding thirty years later.
Role in Pokopia
Cubone appears in rocky terrain — near Boulder-Shaded areas, in the harder, drier sections of the island that have proven resistant to restoration. Their presence in a space that still feels somewhat lost or incomplete is intentional on the game's part. As those areas improve, Cubone's behavior subtly shifts — less defensive, more curious. It doesn't cheer up exactly, but it opens up.
Pokémon Notes
Ground-type from Generation I. Cubone's backstory has been discussed in interviews and fan analyses more extensively than almost any other original Pokémon. It evolves into Marowak. In Pokopia, Cubone is present as an independent resident, the maternal absence a weight it carries quietly through the island's gradual renewal.
