Ditto

⚡

Wild Ditto on this island are an unusual presence — given that the protagonist is also a Ditto, their appearance raises questions about identity and individuality that the game doesn't explicitly address but clearly enjoys having available. A wild Ditto looks exactly like whatever it's copying at any given moment.

The Protagonist's Species

The player-character is a Ditto who has taken human form and maintained it. Wild Ditto on the island don't share this arrangement — they transform freely, copying whatever Pokémon they've encountered most recently. This makes them among the harder species to spot definitively on the island; a Pikachu that behaves oddly might be a Ditto, or might simply be an odd Pikachu.

Role in Pokopia

Wild Ditto appear in areas with diverse Pokémon populations, apparently using the variety as a copying resource. They don't have specific habitat preferences because their habitat preference is 'wherever there are interesting Pokémon to become'. Their presence in an area is a measure of that area's species diversity.

Pokémon Notes

Normal-type from Generation I. Famous for copying opposing Pokémon in battle and for being the universal breeding partner in the mainline games. In Pokopia, both these roles are absent — Ditto is instead the species whose fundamental nature (change, adaptation, becoming) powers the entire game's premise.
