Venonat

Venonat is a round, fuzzy Bug/Poison-type covered in thick purple fur and sporting large compound eyes that glow red in the dark. It looks like something you'd see on a nighttime walk and be startled by, which is an accurate description of the experience.

Role in Pokopia

Venonat is a nocturnal species that appears in forested and shaded habitats after dark — Tree-Shaded Grass, Boulder-Shaded areas, anywhere with natural cover and reduced light. They tend to cluster near other Bug-types during nighttime hours. Their glowing eyes are one of the more visually distinctive night-time sights on the island.

Pokémon Notes

Bug/Poison-type from Generation I. Venonat is notable for a Generation I quirk: its appearance and stats strongly resemble what would later become Butterfree, while Caterpie (who was always intended to be Butterfree's pre-evolution) looks nothing like it. This old design coincidence has no bearing on Pokopia, but it's the kind of trivia that holds up over decades.
