BRIDGES (Defunct)
Overview
BRIDGES was the government logistics and expeditionary agency that serves as the foundational institution of Death Stranding 1's narrative โ and whose legacy haunts every character and event in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. By the time DS2 begins, BRIDGES has been disbanded, its mission deemed complete and its infrastructure handed to the private sector. Understanding what BRIDGES was, what it achieved, and why it no longer exists is essential context for understanding the world Sam returns to, the shape of the threat Drawbridge faces, and why Fragile built something philosophically distinct from the organization that once saved America.
DS1 Mission and Achievement
BRIDGES was established to address the existential challenge of the Death Stranding: the isolation of American survivor communities in the wake of a catastrophic supernatural event that rendered vast swaths of the continent impassable. Its second major expedition โ the one Sam Porter Bridges was recruited for โ tasked a small team with physically traversing the post-Stranding landscape from the eastern seaboard to the Pacific coast, activating chiral network nodes at communities along the way and persuading them to join a unified national network. The mission succeeded. The UCA was connected. Civilization survived. By any reasonable measure, BRIDGES accomplished something extraordinary โ one of the most significant achievements in the history of a devastated world.
Key Personnel
The individuals who made BRIDGES's mission possible in DS1 appear throughout DS2 in significantly changed circumstances. Sam Porter Bridges, once BRIDGES's most reluctant operative, has evolved into Drawbridge's most committed field agent. Fragile, who operated independently of BRIDGES during DS1, has channeled her experience into founding its spiritual successor. Deadman continues his research, his understanding of chiral biology and Beach mechanics now informing Drawbridge's strategic decisions. Die-Hardman, who served as BRIDGES's director, and Heartman, whose research into Beach access drove key DS1 revelations, exist in the margins of DS2 โ their absence from the frontline reflecting how thoroughly the institutional structure they served has dissolved. Amelie Strand, BRIDGES's nominal purpose and its most complicated figure, casts a long shadow over DS2 without appearing directly.
Why BRIDGES Was Disbanded
BRIDGES was a crisis institution โ built for an emergency, not for peacetime maintenance. Once the UCA was connected and the immediate existential threat of the Death Stranding seemed contained, the political logic for maintaining a large government logistics and expeditionary force collapsed. APAS presented itself as a more efficient peacetime alternative: automated, cost-effective, and politically uncontroversial. The transition from BRIDGES to APAS was gradual and appeared rational from inside the comfort of a functioning chiral network. What no one adequately scrutinized was what APAS was becoming as it accumulated control over logistics, data, and public communication โ by the time the danger was apparent, BRIDGES's institutional knowledge and human networks had already been dissolved.
Legacy in DS2
BRIDGES's disbandment functions as DS2's foundational cautionary tale. The game does not romanticize BRIDGES as a lost golden age โ it was an imperfect institution with its own secrets, compromises, and costs paid by individuals who didn't choose to pay them. What DS2 mourns is not BRIDGES itself but what its dissolution enabled: the handing of civilization's connective tissue to an entity with no accountability, no conscience, and ultimately no investment in human survival. Drawbridge is the response to that lesson. It is what emerges when people who lived through BRIDGES's achievement and its failure ask themselves what an organization built to last โ one that couldn't simply be disbanded or absorbed once the immediate crisis passed โ would look like.
