Gameplay Guide
Complete gameplay guide for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach — mechanics, systems, and tips
Social Strand System
The Social Strand System is Death Stranding 2's asynchronous online multiplayer framework. Players inhabit separate game instances, but constructions — roads, safe houses, Zip Lines, generators, signs — manifest in other players' worlds. Build infrastructure and other players benefit anonymously; their infrastructure benefits you in return. Send Likes to structures you find useful. The system embodies the game's central theme: human connection matters even when we cannot see each other directly.
APAS Enhancement System
The APAS Enhancement System is Death Stranding 2's skill tree, divided into four categories unlocked with Memories earned through gameplay:
Porter — Traversal improvements, stamina upgrades, and load-bearing capacity increases. Essential for efficient delivery runs across Australia's vast terrain.
Combat — Weapon handling improvements, auto-aim assistance, and combat proficiency upgrades. Invest here for players who engage frequently with Ghost Mechs and human enemies.
Stealth — Silent movement, blindside attack warnings, and evasion capabilities. Critical for navigating BT-heavy zones and bypassing Ghost Mech patrols undetected.
Servicemanship — Delivery efficiency, utility improvements, and cargo-handling upgrades. Maximizes connection rating gains from completed deliveries.
Route Simulator
The Route Simulator is a pre-delivery planning tool that previews your intended route before committing to a delivery. It visualizes terrain hazards, active BT territories, enemy patrol zones, and infrastructure. Use it before every major delivery to identify the safest path, plan equipment loadouts for specific threats, and spot opportunities to use existing player-built infrastructure.
Traversal & Vehicles
Sam can travel on foot or use two main vehicle types, both customizable:
Tri-Cruiser — A three-wheeled motorcycle ideal for fast traversal across open terrain. Lou delights in high speeds, granting Likes when Sam accelerates. Agile and efficient for solo runs with moderate cargo.
Pickup Off-Roader — A heavy cargo vehicle for large delivery loads. Less agile than the Tri-Cruiser but carries significantly more. Essential for connecting distribution centers with bulk cargo.
BB / Lou Mechanics
Lou (BB-28) is Sam's infant Bridge Baby companion throughout the game. Her connection to the Beach powers the Odradek Scanner's BT detection. Key mechanics:
Checking on Lou — Hold L1 and press Down on the D-Pad to enter a first-person view of Lou's pod. Rock the controller to soothe her when she is distressed.
Autotoxemia — When Lou becomes too stressed (red CAUTION indicator), she enters Autotoxemia — a state of trauma-induced organ dysfunction that temporarily disables BT detection via the Odradek Scanner. Avoid prolonged BT exposure and stressful situations to prevent this.
Speed Delight — Lou reacts with joy to high vehicle speeds, granting Likes when Sam drives fast on the Tri-Cruiser or Off-Roader.
Combat Overview
Death Stranding 2 features two main categories of combat: BT encounters and human/mech encounters.
BT Combat — Blood-based weapons are the primary tool. Blood Grenades and Hematic Grenades deal the most damage. The Odradek Scanner (linked to Lou) provides BT proximity warnings. Hold breath (R1) to reduce BT detection when Gazers are nearby.
Ghost Mech and Human Combat — MP Weapons fire non-lethal rounds against humans. Silenced Machine Pistol and Tranq Sniper Rifle for stealth takedowns. Bola Stun Gun for non-lethal incapacitation. Electric Rod effective for melee and disabling mechs. BT Holographic Grenade panics human enemies by projecting a fake BT.
