Blood Grenade
Overview
Blood Grenades are anti-BT throwables in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, crafted using Sam Porter Bridges's own blood. Blood is inherently toxic to BTs โ creatures bound to the realm of the dead โ and Blood Grenades weaponize this property into a thrown area-denial tool. When detonated, they scatter Sam's blood across a wide radius, burning and dispersing any BTs caught in the splash zone. They are one of the earliest and most consistently useful weapons available to players throughout the game.
How to Craft
Blood Grenades are crafted using Sam's blood, which is automatically harvested when Sam sustains damage or when players choose to voluntarily donate blood at a terminal. Blood is a renewable resource โ Sam's repatriate physiology means his body continuously regenerates it โ making Blood Grenades one of the few weapons in Death Stranding 2 that can be replenished without requiring external materials. The crafting interface at any terminal allows players to convert blood reserves directly into grenade units.
Combat Usage
In BT encounters, Blood Grenades serve primarily as area-denial tools. Throwing one into a cluster of Gazers โ the smaller, tethered BTs that float ominously through the tar โ burns through their numbers quickly and can prevent them from latching onto Sam and dragging him into the tar. They are also effective as an opener against larger BT encounters: lob a Blood Grenade into the tar pool surrounding a Catcher-class BT to deal damage before the main confrontation begins. Their wide splash radius makes precision throws unnecessary, favoring broad use over careful aim.
Lore Context
Sam's status as a repatriate โ a rare individual who returns from the Beach after death โ gives his blood a unique potency against BTs that ordinary human blood does not possess. Reapatriates straddle the boundary between life and death, and their blood carries a vital energy that is anathema to creatures fully claimed by the realm of the dead. This biological quirk is what makes Sam uniquely suited as a porter and a fighter: his very existence is a weapon against the forces of extinction.
Tips and Strategies
Stockpile Blood Grenades generously before entering any confirmed BT territory โ the route planner and Odradek activity can help identify BT zones before departure. In BT boss encounters involving a Catcher, aim your first throw at the glowing tar pool surrounding the Catcher to deal opening damage, then immediately follow up with additional throws as the Catcher emerges. This front-loaded burst of damage can significantly reduce the length and difficulty of boss fights. Between Blood Grenades and Hematic Grenades, Blood Grenades are the better choice for clearing Gazer swarms due to their broader spread.
