Smeargle
Wild Smeargle on the island share Smearguru's species but not necessarily their ambition. Standard Smeargle are painters too — they use the paint from their tail's tip to mark territory — but their work tends toward the functional rather than the artistic. Territory markings, warnings, location signals to other Smeargle. Useful, but less curated.
Smearguru and the Wild Population
Smearguru is a named character defined by artistic intention and prolific output. Wild Smeargle paint because Smeargle paint. The difference between their marks and Smearguru's is the difference between communication and expression. Both cover surfaces; only Smearguru's surfaces tell stories.
Role in Pokopia
Wild Smeargle appear in areas with natural surfaces suitable for painting — smooth rock formations, the flat sides of boulders, large tree trunks. They leave marks that function as navigation aids on the island; experienced players learn to read Smeargle territory markings as rough indicators of area boundaries.
Pokémon Notes
Normal-type from Generation II. Smeargle's signature move is Sketch, which permanently copies any move it sees — making it the most versatile movepool Pokémon in the franchise theoretically, though its stats prevent most of that versatility from being practical. In Pokopia, the painting function is straightforward and the Sketch mechanic is atmospheric rather than mechanical.
