Smearguru

Smearguru is a Smeargle so thoroughly covered in paint that the original color of their fur is unknowable. They carry an enormous brush that they use with the confident, sweeping strokes of someone who has been painting longer than the island has been empty — which, given the island's history, may well be true.

The Island's Artist

Smearguru functions as both a character and, in a subtle way, a visual narrator. As the island is restored, the marks Smearguru leaves on rocks and trees change. Early paintings tend toward sparse, melancholy abstracts. Later — once more Pokémon have returned and habitats have taken root — the same surfaces might show something that looks almost like celebration.

Players who pay attention to where Smearguru has been painting and what the paintings show will find them a quiet record of the island's transformation.

Quests and Requests

Smearguru occasionally issues requests connected to the environment — asking Ditto to clear a specific area or plant something in a particular spot, presumably because they want to paint there. The requests are practical but the motivation is aesthetic, which makes Smearguru one of the more interesting quest-givers in the roster.
