The Defect
The Defect is the third playable character in Slay the Spire, a malfunctioning robot whose unique mechanic is the Orb system. The Defect Channels Orbs (Lightning, Frost, Dark, and Plasma) into a fixed number of slots, each of which passively triggers an effect every turn and has a powerful one-time Evoke effect. He starts with 3 Orb slots and the Cracked Core relic, which Channels a Lightning Orb at the start of every combat, providing immediate passive damage from turn 1. His starting deck contains 4 Strikes, 4 Defends, Zap (Channel a Lightning Orb), and Dualcast (Evoke the leftmost Orb twice).
The Defect's playstyle centers on building Focus (the buff that enhances all Orb effects), expanding Orb slots, and deciding which Orb types to Channel based on the current situation. Lightning Orbs deal passive damage and are ideal for sustained offense; Frost Orbs generate Block each turn for defense; Dark Orbs accumulate damage over time for burst Evoke; and Plasma Orbs generate extra Energy for card-dense turns. Unlike the other characters, The Defect's power often scales with time spent in combat, making him less reliant on single burst turns.
The Defect's main strength is his adaptability and his powerful late-game scaling with Focus and many Orb slots. His Frost Orb passive Block generation makes defense more automated than other characters, and his Dark Orb Evoke can produce game-ending single hits in the right build. His primary weakness is that Orb-heavy strategies take time to build up and are vulnerable to Focus-reducing debuffs, which can cripple the entire passive system. He is generally considered intermediate in difficulty — accessible due to his strong early-game starting relic but requiring careful Orb management to reach his full potential.
