Wandering Freeswords
The Wandering Freeswords are an independent mercenary collective operating across Pywel, characterized by their lack of fixed allegiances, their pragmatic approach to contracts, and their internal culture of earned respect rather than hierarchical command. Unlike the Greymanes, who built a lasting institutional identity under Gian's leadership, or the Black Bears, who operate through Myurdin's personal authority, the Freeswords are a loose confederation of individuals and small groups who associate under a shared banner when it is advantageous and operate independently when it is not.
The Freeswords' relationship with the Greymanes is complicated by history. Some individual Freeswords served alongside the Greymanes before the ambush and carry genuine loyalty to survivors they know personally. Others see the Greymanes' collapse as an opportunity to fill the market void left by their absence. Still others are simply pragmatic โ they will work with whoever offers the best terms, and as Kliff rebuilds the Greymanes' reputation and resources, the Greymanes' offers become increasingly competitive.
Several questlines in Chapters 4 through 6 involve negotiating with Freesword groups over contracts, territorial disputes, and the fate of specific Freesword individuals whose loyalties are contested. Yann's diplomatic function within the Greymanes makes him the primary figure in these negotiations, and the outcomes shape which Freesword resources and personnel become available to Kliff going forward. The Freeswords are not enemies by default, but they are not allies by default either โ the relationship is earned.
The Freeswords' worldview provides an interesting counterpoint to the Greymanes' mission-driven culture. Where Kliff and the Greymanes are rebuilding toward a purpose โ Gian's legacy, the protection of Pywel, the cosmic mission โ the Freeswords live in a continuous present defined by the next contract. This philosophical difference is not presented as a simple binary of right and wrong; the game's narrative acknowledges that the Freeswords' pragmatism is also a survival strategy, and their skepticism of grand causes is earned through experience.
