Yann
Yann is the Greymanes' diplomat and strategist, one of the four core inner-circle members alongside Kliff, Oongka, and Naira. Where the others are defined primarily by their combat roles, Yann's defining characteristic is his intelligence โ specifically his ability to read people, navigate political systems, and extract advantage from situations where sword work is useless or counterproductive. He is described as resourceful and cunning, someone whose silver tongue has won engagements that no blade could, and whose understanding of Pywel's complex factional landscape makes him uniquely valuable to a company trying to rebuild its alliances from scratch. His personality leans toward the pragmatic and the witty; he is quick to find leverage in a conversation and quick to pivot when circumstances change, without being cynical in the way that sometimes characterizes "the smart one" archetype in ensemble casts.
Like Naira and Oongka, Yann was separated from Kliff during the Black Bears' ambush and spent time operating independently across Pywel before being located and reunited with the company. His survival during this period is, characteristically, a product of his wits rather than his combat prowess โ navigating a continent at war without the protection of the company requires exactly the kind of interpersonal and political acuity Yann has spent his life developing. The quest line associated with locating and reuniting with Yann introduces the Royal Trading system to players, which is narratively appropriate: Yann's knowledge of trade networks, noble house interests, and economic pressure points makes him the character most naturally associated with Pywel's mercantile layer.
Within the rebuilt Greymanes at Howling Hill, Yann occupies the role of faction liaison โ the person responsible for managing relationships with allies like House Serkis, House Celeste, and the Goldleaf Merchant Guild. Kliff leads the company militarily and sets overall direction; Yann translates that direction into the diplomatic language that keeps allies cooperative and potential enemies non-hostile. His key story moments tend to occur at points of political crisis, where the game's various factions are jockeying for position and Kliff needs someone who can say the right thing to the right lord at the right moment. Several of the game's more intricate political storylines, particularly those involving the competing houses of Demeniss in Chapters 8 and beyond, benefit substantially from having Yann's perspective in play. He is a character who rewards players who invest time in his questlines, as the texture of Pywel's political geography becomes considerably richer through his eyes.
Yann's personality creates a useful dynamic within the Greymanes' inner circle. Kliff is stoic and direct; Oongka is philosophical and physically imposing; Naira is aggressive and capable; Yann is the one who watches the room. He notices things others miss, reframes problems in terms of incentives rather than force, and consistently reminds the company that the political victories matter as much as the military ones. This makes him an essential counterweight in the group's dynamic and a character whose absence during the company's scattered period represents a specific kind of loss โ not just a lost fighter, but a lost capacity for the kind of strategic thinking that distinguishes a faction that survives from one that merely endures.
