Progression Guide

How progression works in Crimson Desert: the Abyss Artifact skill tree, gear refinement, and the Greymane Camp system.

How Progression Works

Crimson Desert has no traditional XP or character level system. Progression is entirely through two systems: the Abyss Artifact skill tree and gear refinement. This means character power is always directly tied to player choices and exploration effort.

Abyss Artifact Skill Tree

The skill tree has three branches, all funded by Abyss Artifacts: Stamina (Blue, 16 levels) focuses on movement, ranged options, and unarmed combat; Spirit (Green, 14 levels) covers elemental abilities and combo extensions; Health (Red, 18 levels) handles survivability, gliding, jumping, and defensive abilities. Faded Abyss Artifacts reset the entire tree for a full respec.

Gear Refinement

Every weapon and armor piece has 10 refinement levels. Levels 1-4 use standard gathered materials (ores, gems, wood, animal parts depending on equipment type). Level +5 and above requires Abyss Artifacts as mandatory crafting currency. Unique weapons from boss drops carry Signature Abilities and cannot be refined with duplicate weapons.

Greymane Camp (Howling Hill)

Unlocked in Chapter 3 at Howling Hill, the camp is a major secondary progression system. Expand by recruiting scattered Greymanes and gathering food, silver, and resources. The first expansion requires 2 recruits + 100x food + 250x silver. Three quest tabs track camp progress: Scattered Embers (side quests), Grounds of the Sunrise (expansion projects and survivor locations), and Greymane Commissions (requests from rescued members).

Faction Reputation

Faction reputation runs on a five-tier scale: War → Hostile → Neutral → Friendly → Alliance. Completing a faction's quests builds standing but may reduce standing with rival factions. Alliance-tier Greymanes provide the most capable allied troops in battle. The Greymanes start at Friendly and can reach Alliance through story progression.
