Abyss Artifact

Abyss Artifacts are the most common tier of collectible magical objects recovered from the Abyss, found throughout its sky islands, ruins, and the bodies of defeated Abyss entities. They are crystalline objects of varying shapes and sizes, all emitting a faint luminescence that distinguishes them from non-magical materials. In their base form, Abyss Artifacts serve primarily as crafting components and upgrade materials โ€” the raw building blocks from which more refined magical items and enhancements are constructed.

The process of working with Abyss Artifacts requires either the Alchemy Lab at Howling Hill or specific crafting stations found within the Abyss itself. Basic artifacts can be combined to produce higher-tier refined materials, or processed individually into components for specific equipment upgrades. The crafting system rewards players who accumulate artifacts systematically rather than sporadically, as the higher-tier recipes require quantities that occasional exploration does not reliably provide.

Abyss Artifacts also have a secondary function as quest items. Several of the Library of Providence's research tasks assigned by Alustin require specific types of Abyss Artifacts, tied to the entity or location they were recovered from. These are not purely mechanical interactions โ€” the specific artifact types carry lore about their origin, and examining them in the inventory provides brief descriptions that contribute to the game's cosmological worldbuilding.

The artifact tier system โ€” Base, Faded, and Sealed โ€” reflects the degree of magical charge remaining in the object. A freshly recovered artifact from an active Abyss entity retains its full charge (Sealed). One recovered from a dormant location or long-dead entity has partially discharged (Faded). The base tier artifacts are remnants whose original charge has dissipated almost entirely, leaving the crystalline structure but minimal active magical properties. This distinction matters for crafting: certain recipes require specific tiers, and players cannot substitute freely between them.
