Library of Providence

๐Ÿ“

The Library of Providence is an ancient repository of cosmic knowledge located within the Abyss, accessible only to those with the ability to navigate the supernatural realm. It is the domain of Alustin, the enigmatic scholar-mage who serves as Kliff's primary source of exposition regarding the existential stakes underlying the game's surface narrative. The Library's architecture defies physical logic: vast halls of books and scrolls that stretch beyond visible limits, staircases connecting levels at impossible angles, archives organized by systems of knowledge that predate any civilization currently alive on Pywel. The visual design communicates age and scale in equal measure.

Alustin has maintained the Library for a period of time he is deliberately vague about โ€” long enough to have known Gian personally, long enough to have watched civilizations rise and fall on Pywel from his position in the Abyss. His purpose in summoning Kliff is both urgent and specific: Gian was the Library's appointed guardian in the physical world, the person responsible for ensuring that the entities threatening all worlds could not gain access to the Library's knowledge or use the Abyss as a vector for their nihilistic agenda. With Gian dead, that role is vacant, and Alustin has identified Kliff as the correct successor.

The records within the Library of Providence provide the game's deepest lore. Players who explore Alustin's domain between story missions can access historical documents describing the previous civilizations of Pywel, the nature of the Abyss and its relationship to the physical world, the cosmological framework within which the game's events occur, and the identities and motivations of the entities working to reduce all worlds to nothingness. This optional lore is dense but carefully written, providing context that makes the game's cosmic narrative feel earned rather than arbitrary.

The Library also functions as a mechanical hub for abilities tied to the Abyss. Certain upgrades to Kliff's Spirit and Health skill trees require visiting Alustin and completing tasks he assigns, tying the Library to the player's combat progression in addition to its narrative role. White Crow, the mysterious figure associated with Kliff's awakening in the Abyss, is also connected to the Library โ€” her appearances throughout the game often occur near the Library's access points, suggesting a relationship with Alustin that the game reveals gradually across its eleven chapters.
