Elowen

๐Ÿง‘

Elowen, the Witch of Wisdom, is the first of the five standard witches that players are likely to encounter and the one most directly tied to the game's central progression mechanic: Abyss Gear socketing. She is found in the Hernand region, specifically in the Witchwoods, where she is discovered trapped inside a hut surrounded by thorny vines. Access requires finding a hole in the roof rather than a conventional entrance โ€” a design detail that speaks to the peculiar circumstances of her entrapment. Her actual position, once freed, places her a few hundred meters north of this hut, and she relocates to this more accessible location after Kliff releases her. The Witchwoods themselves, true to their name, are a dense, atmosphere-heavy woodland that has a strong sense of having been enchanted or warped over time, appropriate for a witch's home territory.

Elowen's primary function is to introduce players to the Abyss Gear system. After rescuing her, players gain the ability to create, install, and extract Abyss Gears โ€” the stat-boosting modifications that slot into weapons and armor through Abyss Core sockets. She can embed Abyss Gears into socketed equipment, extract them from sockets and return them to inventory, and create new Abyss Gears from the raw materials players collect through Abyss challenges and exploration. This makes her workshop an essential stop throughout the game, as Abyss Gear optimization is one of the primary avenues for character power growth beyond raw equipment tier. The mechanic ties directly to the Abyss lore: the Gears are physical expressions of Abyss power, and each witch's ability to work with them reflects her connection to that dimension.

Elowen's questline requires players to cleanse four sanctums of Antumbra forces. The sanctums โ€” specifically the Sanctum of Penitence, Sanctum of Temperance, Sanctum of Benediction, and Sanctum of Absolution โ€” are scattered across Hernand and defended by Antumbra worshippers, zealots connected to the corrupted dimension of the Abyss. Enemy types include melee fighters, ranged attackers, and flying units, with the Sanctum of Absolution containing the most challenging content, culminating in a fight against "Antumbra's Sword," a named boss encounter. Each sanctum contains environmental puzzles alongside combat โ€” the Sanctum of Penitence requires restoring a missing pillar cube, the Sanctum of Temperance involves retrieving a Fusion Reactor Core, and the Sanctum of Benediction demands obtaining specific architectural pieces. After each sanctum is restored, Elowen appears to discuss its historical context, building a cumulative picture of what the sanctums were before the Antumbra corrupted them and what restoring them means for the region's connection to the Abyss. Completing all four and returning to Elowen in the Witchwoods unlocks additional workshop capabilities and contributes to the broader witch network that eventually leads to White Crow.
