Marius
Marius is one of the first surviving Greymanes that Kliff locates after the Black Bears' ambush, found wounded in Hernand — nursing a leg injury significant enough to prevent him from fighting but not enough to diminish his usefulness to the company's recovery. His importance in the early chapters is primarily informational: Marius knows where the other scattered Greymanes were last seen, making him the first thread in the web of reunions that defines Chapters 2 and 3. He provides Kliff with leads on Naira, Yann, and others, functioning as the company's institutional memory during the period when the Greymanes are too dispersed to communicate internally.
Once the camp at Howling Hill is established in Chapter 3, Marius transitions into his permanent role as the base's administrative core. He is the camp manager — the person who tracks expansion requirements, assigns camp development objectives, and serves as the primary quest-giver for the faction-level content at Howling Hill. His position at camp means that players who want to develop Howling Hill, unlock new buildings, recruit more Greymanes, and access higher-tier camp facilities will spend a considerable amount of time returning to Marius between story missions. He manages three distinct quest tabs within the Journal's Faction Quest section: Scattered Embers (side quests tied to supporting Greymane characters like Naira, Yann, and Oongka, each representing a personal reunion storyline); Grounds of the Sunrise (camp expansion projects and the broader objective of locating scattered survivors across Pywel); and Greymane Commissions (requests generated by rescued Greymanes already living in the camp, providing ongoing content as the camp population grows).
The camp expansion system Marius oversees requires both material resources — food, silver, and other crafted goods — and a minimum headcount of recruited Greymanes. Each expansion tier unlocks new facilities (the Alchemy Lab, additional mission dispatch slots, expanded recruit capacity) and new quest content, making Marius's tab the game's most direct expression of the "rebuild the faction" fantasy. The first expansion, triggered during Chapter 3's Pioneering sub-chapter, requires 2 recruits, 100 units of food, and 250 silver, and takes 18 in-game hours to complete. Subsequent tiers scale these requirements upward while opening progressively more complex camp infrastructure. Players who neglect the camp system will find themselves missing significant amounts of content; players who invest in it discover that Marius's quest tabs constitute a substantial parallel game running alongside the main campaign, one that provides both material rewards and narrative texture about the Greymanes as a living community.
Marius himself is characterized by the pragmatic warmth of someone who has survived long enough to know what matters. He is not a dramatic figure; he is a reliable one. His injury grounds him in the camp in a way that feels narratively honest rather than contrived — he cannot be in the field, so he is the one holding the base together. This role gives him a quiet dignity within the company's hierarchy: he is not the most powerful Greymane, but he may be the most indispensable one during the rebuilding phase, because the camp without Marius's administrative function would be significantly harder to develop and maintain.
