Witchwoods

๐Ÿ“

The Witchwoods are a dense, magically charged forest region associated with the witches of Pywel โ€” a collective of powerful women who maintain their own communities, practices, and political independence from the noble houses and military factions that control the rest of the continent. The forest itself is visually distinct from Pywel's other woodland areas: the trees are older and larger, their canopies blocking enough light to create a perpetual twilight at ground level, and ambient magical effects โ€” floating lights, shifting fog, sounds without visible sources โ€” make the Witchwoods feel like a space where the rules are different.

The witches' settlements within the Witchwoods range from modest forest clearings to more substantial communal structures built into and around the largest trees. Each of the named witches has her own relationship with the Witchwoods and her own degree of involvement in the forest's governance โ€” Elowen, the Witch of Wisdom, maintains a significant library and observatory; Sylvia, the Hermit Witch, lives at the forest's deepest point in deliberate isolation; Bari, the Witch of Kindness, operates closer to the forest's edges where she can more easily interact with non-witch travelers. Their political relationship with each other is collaborative but not hierarchical.

For Kliff, the Witchwoods are both a source of essential magical knowledge and a navigation challenge. Several questlines require finding specific locations within the forest, which requires either a guide with local knowledge or careful attention to environmental cues โ€” the forest does not yield its geography easily to those who approach it as merely another wilderness to traverse. The witches' awareness of the Abyss and its dangers makes them valuable allies; their independence means that earning that alliance requires demonstrating respect for their autonomy and their ways.

The relationship between the Witchwoods and the cosmic narrative involves the witches' historical role as a counterbalancing force to the Abyss entities' influence in the physical world. Their magic is not derived from the Abyss but predates it โ€” or rather, exists in a different relationship to the fundamental forces that the Abyss represents. Understanding this distinction becomes important in the game's final chapters, when the nature of the threat crystallizes and the witches' contribution to the collective defense of Pywel becomes clear.
