Horse
Horses are the primary mount for traversal across Pywel and the foundational element of Crimson Desert's mount system. Wild horses are found in multiple regions, beginning with the taming opportunities at Deepfog Basin in Hernand, and each tamed horse carries randomized Speed, Stamina, and Strength stats that determine its performance characteristics. No two horses are identical โ the randomization system ensures that finding a horse with superior stats requires either luck or systematic taming of multiple animals, incentivizing the exploration that surfaces other content.
The taming minigame initiates when Kliff approaches a wild horse slowly and successfully mounts it. The horse attempts to throw him off through a series of directional inputs and timing challenges, and maintaining contact through the full sequence results in a tamed companion. Each horse levels up through use โ riding, combat, and extended traversal all contribute to a horse's growth, gradually improving its defensive stats and unlocking additional traversal skills including speed bursts and the stamina skills that allow extended galloping.
Horses support mounted combat allowing Kliff to swing weapons, use abilities, and even fire the bow while riding. Mounted combat changes the engagement geometry significantly โ the height advantage over foot soldiers, the speed for hit-and-run tactics, and the option to trample enemies on charge all make a skilled horse rider substantially more dangerous than the same character on foot in open terrain. Mounted combat skills are separate from dismounted skills but share the same cooldown resources, meaning players must choose between staying mounted for mobility or dismounting for access to the full skill toolkit.
The bonding system, built through consistent interaction โ petting, feeding, and extended use โ unlocks additional horse skills not available through leveling alone. A fully bonded horse develops a speed burst ability, additional stamina, and the trained aggression to charge enemies on command rather than shying away from combat. Equipment applicable at stables โ caparisons for aesthetics, horseshoes for speed and stability, saddles for mounted combat bonuses โ allows further customization of a horse that the player has invested in. The combination of randomization, leveling, bonding, and equipment makes horse development one of the most personal progression systems in the game.
