Higgs Monaghan
Overview
Higgs Monaghan is the flamboyant, nihilistic antagonist of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, reprising his role as the franchise's most theatrical and dangerous villain. Draped in gold, armed with a gravity-defying arsenal, and driven by a gleefully destructive philosophy, Higgs revels in chaos and annihilation with the swagger of a rock star and the lethality of a natural disaster. His return in Death Stranding 2 escalates both his personal vendetta against Sam Porter Bridges and his role as a weapon of mass destruction in the hands of a far larger and more sinister force โ the entity known as The President.
History: Death Stranding 1
In Death Stranding, Higgs served as the leader of Homo Demens, a radical faction that sought to accelerate the extinction of humanity and hasten the merging of the world of the living with the world of the dead. His powerful DOOMS ability granted him command over BTs and allowed him to manipulate the Beach itself, making him one of the most dangerous individuals in a world already teetering on the edge of extinction. Sam Porter Bridges ultimately defeated Higgs in a climactic confrontation, stranding him on the Beach โ a fate arguably worse than death, condemned to an endless liminal existence with no hope of return. That defeat did not extinguish Higgs; it only delayed him.
Resurrection in Death Stranding 2
By the events of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Higgs has been resurrected and repurposed by The President โ an APAC-linked amalgamation of thousands of deceased souls โ as a living weapon. The President exploited Higgs's hatred of Sam and his inherent destructive drive, arming him with Ghost Mechs and deploying him as a destabilizing force against everything Sam and Drawbridge are working to protect. It is Higgs who attacks Sam's home at the game's outset, killing Fragile and setting the entire narrative in motion. His resurrection is not a redemption โ it is an amplification of every dangerous quality he already possessed, now given institutional backing and devastating firepower.
Combat and Abilities
Higgs's combat style in Death Stranding 2 is as theatrical as it is lethal. His signature weapon is an electric guitar that doubles as a devastating energy weapon, channeling his rock-star aesthetic into something genuinely dangerous. He commands Ghost Mechs โ powerful supernatural machines โ as extensions of his will, and retains his DOOMS-enhanced ability to interface with the Beach and the entities that inhabit it. Fighting Higgs is less a tactical engagement and more an endurance test against a performer who treats combat as a stage and Sam as his audience. His encounters with Sam in Death Stranding 2 culminate in his capture of Tomorrow โ Lou in her aged form โ forcing Sam into a final, desperate confrontation.
Troy Baker's Performance
Higgs is voiced and motion-captured by Troy Baker, one of the most celebrated performers in the video game industry, known for roles including Joel in The Last of Us and the Joker in Batman: Arkham Origins. Baker's portrayal of Higgs is a masterclass in villainous charisma โ every line delivery crackles with menace barely disguised as charm, and his physicality in motion capture gives Higgs an unpredictable, kinetic energy that makes him as entertaining as he is threatening. Higgs has resonated enormously with Death Stranding fans for exactly this reason: Baker and Kojima together created a villain who is impossible to look away from, a force of pure id unleashed in a world that desperately needs order.
