Tarman

Overview

Tarman is the eccentric and indispensable captain of the DHV Magellan, the mobile seafaring base from which Drawbridge conducts its operations throughout Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Where other crew members contribute expertise, combat ability, or supernatural sensitivity, Tarman contributes something utterly unique: the ability to navigate the mysterious Tar Network, the vast underwater infrastructure of tar that connects distant parts of the world. Without Tarman, the Magellan could not move. Without the Magellan, Drawbridge could not function. In many ways, Tarman is the beating heart of the operation โ€” and one of the most visually and narratively distinctive characters in a game full of memorable figures.

Tarman's method of navigating the Tar Network is one of Death Stranding 2's most striking images: he inserts his own severed arm โ€” coated in tar โ€” directly into the ship's helm in order to interface with the network and guide the Magellan through it. This visceral, body-horror-adjacent act is treated by Tarman with complete matter-of-factness, as if it were simply the cost of doing business in a world where the boundaries between the human body and the supernatural landscape have long since blurred. The image of Tarman at the helm, his tar-black arm disappearing into the ship's interface, is one of the game's most iconic visual motifs, encapsulating the strange intimacy between humanity and the forces that have reshaped their world.

Role in Drawbridge

As captain, Tarman occupies a position of quiet authority aboard the DHV Magellan. He is not a combatant in the field and does not accompany Sam on deliveries or missions, but the entire enterprise depends on his ability to keep the Magellan moving and to chart routes through the Tar Network that would be impassable to anyone else. His eccentricities โ€” and there are many โ€” are treated with affection by the crew, who recognize that Tarman's strangeness and his capabilities are inseparable. The Magellan under his guidance becomes not just a vehicle but a home, a sanctuary in constant motion across a world that offers very little safety.

George Miller's Likeness

Tarman's likeness is provided by George Miller, the legendary Australian filmmaker responsible for the Mad Max franchise, Babe, Happy Feet, and Three Thousand Years of Longing. The casting of Miller's likeness for a seafaring captain who navigates post-apocalyptic wastelands via supernatural infrastructure is a choice loaded with obvious affection: Miller has spent decades telling stories about lone figures crossing inhospitable landscapes in impossible vehicles, and Tarman is a spiritual heir to that tradition. Tarman is voiced by Marty Rhone, whose performance gives the character a dry, wry warmth that makes him immediately endearing despite โ€” or because of โ€” his considerable oddness. The combination of Miller's weathered, distinctive face and Rhone's voice creates a character who feels like a legend in his own right.
