Tarfall
Overview
Tarfall is a supernatural environmental hazard unique to Death Stranding 2, distinct from the BT zones and Timefall regions familiar from DS1. Unlike standard BT infestations that can be navigated around with patience and stealth, Tarfall anomalies are localized zones where the boundary between the physical world and a tar-saturated supernatural space collapses โ actively pulling Sam into a separate encounter with Neil Vana's ghost. Tarfall represents a new category of supernatural intrusion in DS2's world: not passive haunting, but aggressive reaching from the other side of the boundary, as the unresolved Ka of a dead man refuses to simply haunt the living and instead demands confrontation.
What Tarfall Is
Tarfall zones are areas of extreme tar and Chiralium concentration where the physical world and Neil Vana's personal Beach have become so closely overlapped that the boundary between them breaks down entirely in that location. The tar that saturates the supernatural space bleeds through into the physical world, and the physics of the Beach โ its anomalous relationship with time, its hostility to unguarded living presence โ overwhelm the normal rules governing the physical landscape. When Sam enters a Tarfall zone, he is not merely walking into a haunted area; he is being actively drawn through the boundary into Neil's Beach by the accumulated force of Neil's unresolved Ka. The tar is not incidental โ it is the physical manifestation of the boundary itself, the substance of the liminal space made tangible and inescapable.
The Neil Vana Encounters
Inside Tarfall anomalies, Sam encounters and must fight Neil Vana's ghost โ a spectral soldier who appears multiple times across DS2's Mexico chapter, each encounter more intense than the last and each revealing more of Neil's history. The fights are not simple combat sequences: they are structured as both physical challenges and story deliveries, with Neil's dialogue and behavior during the encounters gradually building the portrait of who he was in life, what he lost, what he was trying to protect, and how he is connected to Lou and Sam. Neil's ghost is not villainous in any straightforward sense; it is a man trapped at a boundary he could never cross in life or death, unable to let go of something the living world holds. Fighting through Neil's Tarfall encounters is the primary way players come to understand the emotional truth of DS2's most tragic backstory.
The Tar Network
While Tarfall represents a local intrusion of tar-based supernatural phenomena, the broader Tar Network that connects continental regions is an entirely separate and more expansive system. The Tar Network is a supernatural sea of tar connecting landmasses beneath the physical world โ a subterranean supernatural substrate that can be navigated by the right vessel with the right key. The DHV Magellan is that vessel, and Tarman's severed arm is the biological key that allows it to interface with the Tar Network for transcontinental travel. This connection between local Tarfall phenomena and the global Tar Network creates a coherent cosmology: tar in DS2 is not merely a visual motif but a consistent supernatural substance that appears at every scale, from individual haunted zones to the infrastructure connecting continents.
Gameplay Structure
Tarfall encounters in DS2 are scripted narrative sequences rather than random environmental events. They occur at specific story-driven points during the Mexico chapter, triggered by reaching certain locations or achieving certain story milestones. Each Tarfall encounter is designed as a self-contained experience combining combat mechanics with story revelation โ players must engage with both to progress. The encounters escalate in difficulty and narrative weight as the story progresses, with later Tarfall fights against Neil being significantly more demanding than the first. Because these are scripted encounters, players cannot encounter Tarfall randomly or stumble into a Neil fight unexpectedly; the encounters are paced to ensure the story information they deliver lands with maximum impact at the right narrative moments.
Thematic Significance
Tarfall embodies Neil Vana's story in physical form. A man who spent his life at a border โ caught between duty and love, between the world he belonged to and the world he wanted to protect โ finds in death that he cannot cross the border that every person must eventually cross. His Ka is trapped in the tar at the boundary between living and dead, unable to release what it is holding onto. The tar that characterizes his supernatural presence is the perfect visual metaphor: tar traps, tar holds, tar refuses to let go. Sam must literally fight through this material, physical expression of grief and attachment in order to reach the truth about Lou, about Neil, and about what it costs to protect someone you love in Death Stranding's world. Tarfall is not a random hazard; it is a man made landscape by what he could not let go of.
