Lapras
Lapras is a gentle giant — a large Water/Ice-type with a smooth shell and a calm disposition, the kind of Pokémon you'd want near you during a long voyage. In Pokopia, that maritime quality is literal: Lapras teaches Surf, which lets Ditto travel across open water for the first time.
The Water Gate
Lapras doesn't appear until the island's water environments have been meaningfully restored — rivers returned, ponds refilled, coastal areas no longer parched. This is an intentional progression gate: you can't just find Lapras and rush to Surf. The island has to deserve Lapras's presence first, and earning that takes time and Water Gun and Squirtle's friendship and patient restoration work.
Role After Surf
Once Surf is unlocked, Lapras occasionally appears on the open water itself, visible from the shore. Finding them there — enormous, unhurried, a living landmark of the sea you now have access to — is one of Pokopia's quieter rewards.
Pokémon Notes
Water/Ice-type from Kanto, famous for being the 'ship Pokémon' that transported people and Pokémon in the pre-technology eras of the Pokémon world's lore. In most games, Lapras is the HM Surf vehicle. In Pokopia, the relationship is inverted: Lapras teaches you to surf, rather than being the vehicle. The distinction matters for the game's tone.
