Surf
Surf is a Transformation move, which means it fundamentally changes how Ditto moves through the world rather than changing the world itself. Once learned, Ditto can travel across open water — rivers, lakes, coastal sections of the island — opening up entire regions that were previously inaccessible. Surf is a gate key that you earn rather than find.
How to Learn It
Surf is taught by Lapras, a large Water/Ice-type that is, appropriately, one of the quintessential surfing Pokémon in the mainline games. Befriending a Lapras requires patience — they don't appear unless the island's water environments have been partially restored — creating a natural progression gate: you have to make the water worth living in before the Pokémon who can teach you to cross it will arrive.
World Impact
The areas unlocked by Surf contain their own Pokémon populations, habitat opportunities, and materials. In this sense, Surf isn't just travel — it's a second act of island restoration. Some quests and character storylines only progress once you can reach water-locked locations.
Transformation vs. Regular
Surf is categorized as a Transformation move alongside Glide, distinguishing it from Regular moves that change terrain. The distinction matters for how you think about your move priorities: terrain moves expand what the island can host, while transformation moves expand where you can go.
