Cut
Cut is to trees what Rock Smash is to boulders: it clears them. Overgrown paths blocked by thick brush, trees that have fallen across useful areas, dense vegetation that's accumulated over years of island neglect — Cut handles all of it. In doing so, it also yields Sturdy Sticks and Small Logs, making it one of the most material-productive moves in the game.
How to Learn It
Cut is taught by Scyther, a Bug/Flying-type whose bladed forearms make the association obvious. Befriending a Scyther on the island — they tend to appear in areas with existing vegetation — eventually unlocks Cut for Ditto. Since Scyther is also one of the earlier move-teacher Pokémon available, Cut often comes before some other tool moves.
Uses in the World
Beyond clearing paths, Cut's primary contribution is the lumber economy. Sturdy Sticks and Small Logs are required for most of the early furniture recipes — Log Tables, Log Chairs, the Campfire, the Storage Box. Without Cut, the crafting tree stalls early. Players who prioritize Scyther friendship tend to have a smoother early-to-mid game.
Move Category
Cut is a Regular move, placing it alongside Leafage, Rock Smash, and Rototiller as a terrain-affecting tool rather than a traversal move like Surf or Glide.
