Matthias

🧑

Matthias is a captain of the Wandering Freeswords, a mercenary company operating in and around Hernand City. His encounter with Kliff occurs during the main quest in the city of Hernand, framed as a formal duel rather than a life-or-death battle — a fact reflected in his attack patterns, which are competent but calibrated to feel like a measured test rather than an attempt at murder. Within the story, Matthias and the Wandering Freeswords occupy a position in Hernand's factional ecosystem, and his willingness to engage Kliff in single combat speaks to a mercenary code of conduct that distinguishes his company from the more lawless elements operating in the region. He is the game's first formal boss encounter after the prologue and serves as an introductory tutorial to several mechanics — particularly the Watch and Learn system and the benefits of mixing light and heavy attacks — without being significantly threatening to most players.

Matthias is a knight who fights with sword and basic physical attacks. He carries two health bars, but guides consistently note that his behavior does not change meaningfully between bars — the same attacks, the same patterns, without the acceleration or new mechanic introduction that characterizes multi-phase bosses later in the game. This is a deliberate design choice: as the first boss, Matthias teaches the rhythm of the health bar system without introducing the cognitive load of adapting to phase transitions. His attacks are slow and telegraphed — basic sword strikes and kicks that give players ample time to react — and his damage output is described as the lowest of any boss in the game. Going into the Matthias fight without knowledge of the game's systems and coming out with a clear sense of how parrying, blocking, and combo timing work is the intended outcome.

The most effective mechanical demonstration built into the Matthias fight is the Watch and Learn interaction with his Pump Kick. Watching Matthias perform this attack and then using the Watch and Learn prompt grants Kliff the Pump Kick skill, which can then be deployed against Matthias himself, leaving him completely vulnerable to follow-up attacks. This is the game's first explicit demonstration of how the Watch and Learn system converts enemy techniques into player abilities, and the fact that it is demonstrated against the first boss — and that the acquired technique is immediately useful in the same fight — creates a clear and positive feedback loop. The reliable offensive pattern for players who do not discover the Watch and Learn option is three light attacks followed by three heavy attacks to interrupt Matthias's recovery, then dodge back to restore stamina before repeating.
