Fortain, the Cursed Knight
Fortain the Cursed Knight is encountered during "The Cursed Knight" questline and presents players with the game's first formal 2v1-structure boss fight โ not in the sense of two independent boss entities, but in the sense that Fortain continuously summons spectral beings that constitute a secondary threat during the main fight. The spectral entities cannot be damaged and must be avoided rather than eliminated; one wields a massive axe delivering downward strikes, the other fires crossbow projectiles, and both attack in sequences of two or three strikes before dissipating. The challenge of the fight is managing the spectral entities' attack timing while simultaneously maintaining the offensive pressure necessary to deal meaningful damage to Fortain himself โ a challenge compounded by the arena's musket-wielding soldiers positioned at the edges, who fire large fireball shots that stagger Kliff if they connect, interrupting attack chains at critical moments.
Fortain's large shield requires Force Palm to stagger reliably โ light attacks bounce off it and heavy attack penetration is less effective than against Cassius Morten's defensive setup. The fight's recommended loop is Force Palm to stagger, followed by a chain of heavy attacks using the RT/R2 button, then withdrawal to let stamina recover before the next Force Palm cycle. Skills like Crow's Pursuit (which causes crows to follow and continue damaging Fortain even after Kliff retreats) are particularly valuable, as they sustain damage output during the periods when players need to manage the spectral entity attacks. The musket soldiers at the arena's edge are best addressed intermittently โ pausing the Fortain engagement long enough to close on a soldier and eliminate them reduces the stagger risk substantially, though doing so means leaving Fortain's attack sphere temporarily.
His actual attack patterns, separated from the spectral entity complication, are described by guides as "not as complex as previous bosses." He has a charge that can corner players and basic sword-and-shield combos, but his individual attack timing is more readable than Myurdin's or Kearush's. The difficulty of the Fortain fight comes entirely from the simultaneous management of three threat sources โ Fortain himself, the two spectral types, and the arena soldiers โ rather than from Fortain's individual complexity. Players who focus exclusively on Fortain while ignoring the other threats will find themselves staggered or interrupted at the worst possible moments; players who over-prioritize threat management will never build enough offensive pressure to make progress on Fortain's health bar. Recommended preparation includes Tier 3-5 equipment with socketed Abyss cores, abundant meat-based healing food, and the Nature's Echo skill for heavy attack damage multiplication during stagger windows.
