Golden Star

💀

Golden Star is a mechanical dragon — not a living creature but a steampunk-style construct with golden exterior plating, built by the eccentric scientist Marni as a weapon housing a critical power core. The encounter occurs in Chapter 11's "Foreboding Shadow" quest chain at Marni's Masterium, an abandoned fortress built into a clifftop in the Delesyia region. The boss's identity as a machine rather than an organic creature gives it a visual language distinct from every other major boss in the game — gears and plating and exhaust vents in place of scales and muscle, the threat of engineered precision in place of animal aggression. Its signature abilities include a flame tornado and a bombard barrage: the flame tornado creates a moving column of fire that must be tracked and evaded, while the bombard barrage launches multiple explosive projectiles across the arena in patterns that require positional awareness to avoid cleanly.

The ground phase of the Golden Star fight rewards spear-throwing during its immobile animation sequences — when the construct pauses between ability activations, the window allows sustained ranged damage output that would be impossible to maintain during its active attack phases. Managing the flame tornado's movement pattern is the primary survival skill for the ground phase: the tornado follows a predictable arc that, once recognized, allows players to maintain offensive positioning while keeping clear of the hazard zone. The bombard barrage launches projectiles whose landing zones are telegraphed by visual indicators on the ground, similar to Goyen's aerial slam mechanic, requiring sustained movement rather than a single dodge to clear safely.

After sufficient ground phase damage, Golden Star breaks free from the Masterium's structural constraints and launches into the sky. Kliff leaps onto Golden Star's back in a combat sequence that shifts the fight into an aerial pursuit — a dramatically distinct encounter mode where Kliff clings to the construct's back and attacks weak points while Golden Star performs maneuvers designed to dislodge him. Kliff's own wyvern companion Blackstar joins the chase during this sequence, creating a three-entity aerial confrontation. Defeating Golden Star during the aerial phase completes the encounter and, once Kliff returns to the Nest of Valor location (visited in Chapter 9), permanently unlocks Blackstar as a rideable dragon mount. Golden Star is therefore not just a boss fight but the culminating event that grants one of the game's most coveted rewards — the ability to fly across Pywel on dragonback.
