Hexe Marie (Boss)

(See the character entry above for Hexe Marie's lore and identity. This entry covers boss fight mechanics in greater tactical detail.)

The Hexe Marie boss encounter is reached in Act 9 after completing the questline leading to her lair. Before the direct confrontation begins, players must destroy totems guarded by Earthen beasts โ€” elemental earth-type constructs animated by Marie's magic โ€” that represent a preamble combat section distinct from the main fight. These Earthen beasts are the first demonstration of the range of Marie's summoning capabilities and serve as a practical warm-up for the crowd management demands of the encounter proper. Destroying the totems completes the pre-boss ritual and triggers the Hexe Marie fight.

The fight is divided across two phases, with the second phase characterized primarily by increased intensity rather than a fundamental mechanical shift. From the fight's opening, Marie teleports constantly, using black magic to blast players around the arena and destabilize positioning. She fires swarms of crows that track the player's location, deploys magic mines that explode on contact and linger as damage-over-time hazards on the floor, and spawns Hexe warriors โ€” undead soldier enemies โ€” at regular intervals throughout both phases. Managing the Hexe warrior waves is the fight's primary crowd management demand: letting them accumulate while focusing exclusively on Marie creates an overwhelming number of sources of incoming damage. Area-of-effect attacks to clear the waves, interrupted by Force Palm and heavy attack windows against Marie herself, constitute the sustainable combat approach.

Phase 2 introduces the multi-clone attack: Marie summons multiple versions of herself that each coordinate a simultaneous crow swarm, filling the arena with homing projectiles from multiple directions simultaneously. Against this attack, the only documented effective response is running โ€” the coverage is too broad for directional dodging and the projectile count too high for any blocking strategy. The key skills recommended are Freeze Arrow (which slows and immobilizes her minions, buying time to deal with the waves before refocusing on Marie), Explosive Arrow (area damage for efficient wave clearing), and Blinding Flash (which provides a stagger window against Marie herself when she is stationary enough to target). Her relatively manageable difficulty by this point in the game โ€” guides note she is "not the hardest in Crimson Desert by any means" despite the spectacle โ€” reflects her position in the Chapter 9 progression: a dramatically significant fight designed to feel epic rather than insurmountably technical.
