Standard Humanoid Ghost Mech

Overview

The Standard Humanoid Ghost Mech is the baseline Ghost Mech unit deployed by APAC throughout Australia in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. These large humanoid supernatural constructs represent APAC's militarization of chiral energy โ€” mechanical frames animated by supernatural forces, deployed as a standing army against any threat to APAC's operations. The Standard Humanoid Ghost Mech is the most frequently encountered Ghost Mech variant and serves as the template against which all other Ghost Mech types are escalations. Heavily armored at the front and equipped with both ranged and melee capabilities, they are significantly more dangerous than standard BT encounters and require a different tactical approach.

Behavior and Detection

Standard Humanoid Ghost Mechs patrol set routes through their designated territory, scanning for targets with head-mounted sensor arrays. The scanning behavior is rhythmic and predictable โ€” experienced players can learn patrol routes and scanning patterns to identify safe movement windows. Upon detecting Sam, a Ghost Mech will engage immediately and, in some areas, can broadcast a detection signal that brings additional units into the engagement zone. This reinforcement mechanic makes early detection especially costly in high-density Ghost Mech areas. Unlike BTs, Ghost Mechs are fully physical constructs and respond to a broader range of combat approaches, though certain weapon types remain more efficient than others.

Attack Patterns

The Standard Humanoid Ghost Mech's combat capabilities span melee and ranged attacks. In melee range it delivers powerful physical strikes and shoulder charges. At range it fires energy-based projectiles that deal significant damage on impact. Its frontal armor is extremely thick, making direct frontal assaults with standard weapons ineffective. The joints โ€” particularly the knees and elbows โ€” and the back of the chassis are the weakest points, where armor coverage is thinner and structural vulnerabilities are exposed. Targeting these joint points deals disproportionate damage and can disable the mech's movement if the knee joints are sufficiently damaged.

Weak Points and Strategy

The most efficient takedown method for Standard Humanoid Ghost Mechs is targeting the leg joints with Electric Rod throws. The Electric Rod, when thrown accurately at a mech's knee joint, delivers a high-voltage discharge that disrupts the chiral energy animating the construct and causes significant structural damage. Multiple Electric Rod hits to the same knee joint will immobilize the mech, removing its ability to pursue Sam and making it a static target for follow-up attacks. MP weapons are effective against all Ghost Mech types and can be directed at joint weak points for sustained damage. Avoid direct frontal engagement whenever possible โ€” flank and target the rear or side exposures.

Lore Context

Ghost Mechs are the physical manifestation of APAC's militarization of supernatural forces. In the years following the events of the original Death Stranding, APAC developed the technology to harness chiral energy โ€” the same energy that connects the living world to the Beach โ€” as a power source for mechanical constructs. The result is an army of supernatural machines: not robots in any conventional sense, but mechanical bodies animated by the same energy that gives rise to BTs. Standard Humanoid Ghost Mechs are the rank-and-file soldiers of this supernatural army, and their presence in Australia signals the depth of APAC's territorial control over the region.

Tips and Tricks

The Electric Rod thrown at a mech's legs is among the most efficient takedown methods available โ€” it combines high damage to the joint weak point with a disruption effect that impairs the mech's movement. Always prioritize avoiding detection to prevent reinforcement calls; in areas with multiple Ghost Mechs, a single detection event can rapidly transform a manageable encounter into an overwhelming one. Use terrain and cover to avoid the ranged energy attacks, and always approach Ghost Mechs from the side or rear rather than frontally. Engaging multiple Standard Humanoid Ghost Mechs simultaneously should be avoided whenever possible; pick them off individually using stealth and positioning.
