Watcher

Overview

The Watcher is an evolved BT variant first encountered during the Australia arc in Chapter 3 of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. Like Gazers, Watchers are translucent humanoid BTs drifting through timefall-affected territory โ€” but the critical difference that sets them apart is their detection method. While Gazers are entirely sound-sensitive, Watchers possess visual detection capability. They can see Sam Porter Bridges even when he is standing completely still and holding his breath, rendering the core stealth tactic that players rely on against Gazers entirely ineffective. This makes Watchers a significantly more dangerous threat and signals DS2's deliberate escalation of BT encounter design as the story progresses into Australia.

Why Watchers Are More Dangerous Than Gazers

The tactics that carry players through early-game Gazer encounters โ€” standing still, holding breath, waiting for the BT to pass โ€” do not apply to Watchers. A Watcher that has line of sight on Sam will detect him regardless of whether he is moving or stationary and silent. This fundamentally shifts the approach required: passive waiting is no longer a viable option, and players must actively manage positioning and sightlines rather than simply freezing in place. The first encounter with a Watcher in Australia is often a jarring moment for players who have become accustomed to the hold-breath strategy, as it forces an immediate adaptation to active evasion techniques.

Avoidance Strategy

Successfully navigating Watcher territory requires active stealth movement at all times. Crouch-walking remains effective for minimizing noise, but the primary concern is now breaking line of sight rather than staying silent. Use terrain features โ€” rock formations, ridge lines, elevation changes, and depressions in the landscape โ€” to stay out of Watcher sightlines entirely. The Odradek scanner is essential for tracking Watcher positions and anticipating their patrol arcs before committing to movement. Plan each segment of a route through Watcher territory with the full patrol path in mind, waiting for windows when a Watcher's facing direction moves away before advancing.

Combat Strategy

Watchers share the same blood weapon vulnerabilities as all BT types โ€” Sam's blood is inherently toxic to them, and Blood Grenades, Hematic Grenades, and blood-based weapons are the most effective tools in direct combat. However, given the increased danger Watchers pose due to their visual detection, avoiding detection entirely is a higher priority than with Gazers. If a Watcher does detect Sam and a tar pool opens, immediately target the tar pool with Hematic Grenades to prevent the situation from escalating. The combat approach is identical to Gazer encounters, but the stakes for allowing detection to occur in the first place are higher in the dense Watcher-populated areas of Australia.

Comparison to Gazers and DS2's Escalating Threat Design

The introduction of Watchers in Australia is a deliberate design choice that reflects DS2's philosophy of escalating threat complexity as the narrative progresses. The early game trains players thoroughly on the sound-detection rules of Gazers, creating a clear mental model of how BT avoidance works. Watchers then break that model in a targeted way โ€” not by making the encounter harder in a raw difficulty sense, but by invalidating a specific learned behavior and forcing players to expand their evasion toolkit. Australia as a region is intentionally more hostile and more BT-saturated than earlier areas, and Watchers are central to communicating that escalation.

Tips and Tricks

Before departing for deliveries through Watcher territory in Australia, use the Route Simulator to identify Watcher-dense areas and plan routes that minimize exposure. Natural terrain elevation is your best tool โ€” routes that use ridgelines and elevated ground allow Sam to maintain height advantages that break Watcher sightlines. Never assume that a Watcher moving away from you means it is safe to advance โ€” wait until the full sightline is clear. The Odradek's directional behavior will indicate Watcher proximity even when the Watchers themselves are not yet visible. Keep a full stock of Hematic Grenades on every delivery through Watcher areas, as the cost of a detection event escalating is significant.
