Withered Wasteland

🌿

The Withered Wasteland is where everything begins. It's the first region Ditto sets foot in, and when you arrive, it looks exactly like its name: gray, cracked, quiet. No Pokémon. Almost no plants. A few weathered boulders and the waiting presence of Professor Tangrowth, who has been here long enough to remember when it wasn't like this.

The Starting Region

The Wasteland functions as Pokopia's tutorial zone, but unlike most tutorial areas that you leave behind and forget, the Wasteland changes as you play. Every habitat placed, every boulder cleared, every patch of grass seeded is visible and permanent. By the time you're deep into mid-game, the Wasteland you started in looks unrecognizable compared to what you first walked into — and that transformation is the point.

The environment level mechanic is most visible here: you can watch a number go up, but you can also just look around and see more birds in the trees, more Pokémon on the paths, more color in what was gray. The Wasteland is the game's main evidence that what you're doing matters.

Tangrowth's Stake

Professor Tangrowth has lived in the Wasteland alone for longer than they'll say. Their tutorials and early quests are scaffolded by genuine investment in this specific place — they're not teaching you abstract island management, they're asking you to help restore their home. The emotional stakes are low-key but real, and the Wasteland is where they're established.

What's Expected

Over the course of the game, the Wasteland is expected to host most of the key habitat types, all seven character-Pokémon at various points, and a fully functioning social hub anchored by Chef Dente's cooking and DJ Rotom's music. The 'withered' in its name becomes increasingly ironic.
