Shield Toss

✨

Shield Toss is a ranged offensive ability unique to Damiane's skill tree, activated by pressing R3 while a shield is equipped. It hurls the equipped shield as a projectile that travels in a straight line, bounces off surfaces and enemies, deals physical damage on each contact, and returns to Damiane's hand after exhausting its bounces or traveling its maximum range. The combination of ranged damage, wall-bouncing trajectory options, and auto-return mechanics makes it one of the most distinctive character abilities in the game.

The tactical applications of Shield Toss are broad. At basic proficiency, it is a reliable ranged option that allows Damiane to deal damage from outside the melee engagement zone. At higher proficiency, it becomes a room-reading tool — players who understand the geometry of an encounter can angle Shield Toss to hit multiple enemies through wall bounces, clear enemies around corners, or strike enemies that are behind cover and inaccessible to direct attacks.

Shield Toss is the recommended primary damage source for the Lucian Bastier boss fight in Chapter 8, during the forced Damiane segment. Bastier spends significant time in Phase 1 with his guard active, blocking melee attacks. Shield Toss bypasses his guard by dealing ranged impact damage that counts as physical rather than melee, allowing consistent damage application while Damiane maintains safe distance. Players who enter this encounter without Shield Toss proficiency will find their damage output severely limited.

Upgrading Shield Toss increases its bouncing count, its damage multiplier on successive bounces, and at maximum upgrade adds a brief stun effect when the shield strikes an enemy from behind — triggering on the return arc of the throw. This stun on the return bounce creates a natural combo starter: throw the shield, begin a melee engagement, and the returning shield stuns the target's adjacent allies, providing a follow-up window that Damiane's rapier can exploit.
