Reed Devil

The Reed Devil is a former slum-dweller who encountered a mysterious mask and was transformed by it, acquiring an Iaijutsu-based combat style that turns the act of drawing a blade into an art form and a weapon. His encounter occurs during the "Dance with the Devil" quest in the Hernand region near Frozen Soul Mountain. The mask is central to his identity and his story: it is implied to be the source of his abilities, and its "secret" is partially revealed upon his defeat, though the Reed Devil flees rather than dies, promising to resume the duel on another day. This framing โ€” a masked fighter driven by something he does not fully understand, fought in a formal duel context, who survives the encounter โ€” gives him a narrative texture uncommon among mid-game bosses. He is not an obstacle to be eliminated but a character the player has clashed with, one who may appear again.

His three phases represent a careful escalation of a single combat philosophy pushed to its extremes. Phase 1 establishes the baseline: the Reed Devil uses sword-draw strikes (the classic Iaijutsu technique of drawing and striking in a single motion, with a one-second wind-up indicated by a lowered stance and a red glint on the blade), thrown spears that arrive in groups of three followed by a closing dash-slash, and brief retreats into the reeds surrounding the arena. The primary defensive tool against the sword-draw is a precisely timed shield parry against the initial strike, which is difficult but creates significant counter-attack time. Blinding Flash during the wind-up is a more reliable stagger option for players who find the parry timing demanding. Phase 1 is the fight's learning period; the mechanics are present in their basic form and players who understand them here will be equipped for what follows.

Phase 2 removes the ability to fight the Reed Devil directly. Five Wicker Totems spawn around the arena and must be destroyed before the fight resumes, while the Reed Devil pursues relentlessly with attacks the guides describe as "essentially unblockable." The strategy is to stop engaging with the boss entirely and focus exclusively on the totems โ€” sprinting between them, using Explosive Arrows for rapid destruction (a single charged Turning Slash heavy hit can also one-shot a totem), and healing continuously while keeping momentum. Running in straight lines is fatal; constant rolling and directional changes are necessary to survive the Reed Devil's pursuit. Phase 2 is a test of whether players can prioritize an objective under pressure rather than fighting on instinct.

Phase 3 is the fight's true challenge. The Reed Devil becomes "highly aggressive" with longer combos, more frequent jumping slams, and the addition of red-colored wave projectiles on his sword draws โ€” a direct escalation of the Phase 1 mechanic that now deals more damage and covers more ground. A clone appears simultaneously from a different direction, "throwing off dodge timing" by requiring players to track two sources of incoming damage rather than one. The effective counters are grappling moves (Throw, Lariat, Dropkick) that cancel the sword-draw animation before it completes, positional centrality in the arena to spot the clone's approach earlier, and continuous food consumption to sustain health through unavoidable hits. The minimum recommended preparation is 40 units of Grilled Meat; 100+ is the practical recommendation for players who struggle with Phase 3's clone-plus-wave combination.
