Destroyer: Runner Shell Guide

The Destroyer is Marathon's frontline combat Shell — a durable, aggressive tank with homing missiles, an energy shield, and a directional dash. Best for new players and head-on combat.

Destroyer

The Destroyer is Marathon's premier frontline combat Shell and the recommended starting choice for players new to extraction shooters. Built around sustained damage output and defensive resilience, Destroyer excels in close-to-mid-range firefights where its Riot Barricade and homing missile system deliver maximum value.

Overview

  • Role: Combat Specialist / Aggressive Tank
  • Difficulty: Beginner
  • Team Role: Frontline
  • Best For: New players, aggressive pushers, head-on combat enthusiasts

Abilities

Prime Ability: Search & Destroy

Activates shoulder-mounted missile pods that automatically fire immobilizing homing missiles at targets the player has dealt sustained damage to. Ideal for finishing weakened enemies or punishing players who attempt to retreat. The homing lock means enemies cannot simply run out of range once the ability is charged.

Tactical Ability: Riot Barricade

Deploys a frontal energy shield that blocks incoming damage. Cooldown scales based on how long the barricade stays deployed and how much damage it absorbs, a heavily used barricade takes longer to recharge. Deploy it proactively before pushing, not reactively when already under fire.

Trait: Thruster

Dash in any direction. Works horizontally, laterally, and vertically, use it to close distance quickly, dodge incoming fire, or reach elevated positions. Thruster makes Destroyer significantly more mobile than its tank archetype suggests.

Trait: Tactical Sprint

Enhanced movement speed that significantly closes distance on enemies, at the cost of generating additional heat. Use in controlled bursts to avoid overheating mid-engagement. Combining Tactical Sprint with Thruster makes Destroyer one of the fastest-closing Shells in the game.

Playstyle Guide

Destroyer rewards aggressive, forward-moving play. Pop Riot Barricade before pushing through doorways or across open ground, absorb the initial burst of incoming fire while closing distance. Once close, apply sustained damage to build your Search & Destroy homing lock on the target, then let the missiles finish the job if they try to escape.

The primary weakness is heat management. Tactical Sprint generates heat fast, and overheating during a push can be fatal, your movement locks up right when you need it most. Learn to sprint in controlled bursts and crouch-walk to vent heat between engagements. A Destroyer that overheats in the open is an easy kill.

Tips & Strategies

  • Deploy Riot Barricade before pushing: not after you start taking damage.
  • Thruster can go vertical: dash upward to reach elevated positions or escape to high ground mid-fight.
  • Pair with shotguns or precision rifles that reward the close range Destroyer naturally achieves.
  • Run alongside Triage for a powerful frontline + healer combo, Triage's Med-Drone keeps you alive through sustained pushes.
  • Combine with Recon for information-backed aggression: know exactly where enemies are before you push.
  • Remember that Search & Destroy's missiles are most valuable for finishing mobile targets, don't hold it waiting for a perfect moment.

Squad Synergies

Destroyer is one of Marathon's most synergy-rich Shells. Pair with Recon (for enemy location data before pushes), Triage (for sustained healing that keeps the frontline alive), or Vandal (for an all-aggression double-damage-dealer comp that overwhelms opponents before they can coordinate a defense).
