Heat System: Game Mechanics Guide

The Heat System is Marathon's core stamina mechanic — sprinting, sliding, and using abilities all generate heat. Overheat and your movement locks up. Learn to manage heat or die. Essential knowledge for every Runner Shell.

The Heat System

Heat is Marathon's stamina equivalent: a resource that governs how aggressively Runners can move and use abilities. Unlike traditional stamina bars, heat is generated by actions rather than depleted: the more intensely you move and fight, the hotter your Shell gets. Overheat, and your movement severely restricts until your Shell cools down. Understanding and managing the heat system is fundamental to performance in Marathon regardless of which Shell you play.

What Generates Heat

The following actions all add heat to your Shell's thermal state:

  • Sustained sprinting: the longer you sprint, the more heat accumulates
  • Sliding (standard and Power Slide on Vandal)
  • Using movement abilities: Thruster (Destroyer), Microjets (Vandal), Power Slide (Vandal)
  • Activating tactical abilities that have heat costs: Active Camo (Assassin), Riot Barricade (Destroyer)
  • Battery Overcharge (Triage): boosts damage output at a heat cost
  • Tactical Sprint (Destroyer trait): enhanced speed at significant heat cost
  • Environmental Heat Cascade events on Outpost: passive heat generation from the environment

What Happens When You Overheat

When your heat meter fills completely, your Shell enters an overheated state. Your movement speed drops dramatically: you can only shuffle forward at a crawl while the Shell vents heat. All movement abilities are disabled until cooling completes. In a firefight, this is almost always fatal. A Runner who overheats in the open is an easy kill for any opponent.

How to Cool Down

  • Crouch-walking: the fastest way to vent heat. Move to cover and crouch-walk when heat approaches critical.
  • Standing still: heat dissipates when not performing heat-generating actions.
  • Walking (standard pace): slower cooling than crouch-walk, but maintains mobility.

Heat Capacity and Shell Differences

Different Shells have varying base Heat Capacity. Vandal is designed around the heat system, all its abilities generate heat but its Amplify Prime reduces heat costs temporarily. Implants can modify heat capacity: some increase the total capacity (allowing more sustained action) while others trade lower capacity for other benefits (like stronger shields).

Heat Management Best Practices

  • Never sprint at 100% heat: learn to sprint in controlled bursts with rest intervals.
  • Save ability uses for when you need them most, not for continuous use in transit.
  • Approach fights walking: enter engagements with a cool Shell so you have heat budget for combat abilities.
  • On Outpost during Heat Cascade: move to covered interiors and reduce ability usage until the event ends.
  • Recon's Tracker Drone causes forced overheat on targets, a hard counter to any ability-reliant Shell.
