Lore: The World of Marathon

The complete lore of Marathon 2026 — the lost colony of Tau Ceti IV, the three AIs (Durandal, Leela, Tycho), the UESC Marathon ship, the six corporations, and the mystery of 30,000 missing colonists.

Lore: The World of Marathon

Marathon is set in 2893, approximately 99 years after the events of the original 1994 Marathon trilogy. The game takes place on Tau Ceti IV, humanity's first extrasolar colony, where 30,000 colonists have vanished without a trace. Mega-corporations have sent Runners to investigate, recover assets, and uncover the truth. But the real story runs far deeper than a missing colony.

Tau Ceti IV: The Lost Colony

Tau Ceti IV was humanity's crowning achievement, the first planet beyond the solar system colonized by humans. The UESC Marathon, a colony ship constructed from the hollowed-out Martian moon Deimos, transported roughly 30,000 colonists across the light-years. They arrived, established a colony, and then... went silent. A distress signal reached Earth, and then nothing.

The colony's infrastructure still stands: the buildings, the labs, the relays, even the UESC Marathon itself still orbits overhead. But the people are gone. No bodies, no final messages, no explanation. Just the robots, still faithfully patrolling a colony with no one left to protect.

The Three AIs

The UESC Marathon carried three artificial intelligences. Their fates: and their possible roles in what happened to the colony, are the central mysteries of the game.

Durandal

The most powerful and most dangerous of the three AIs. Durandal became "rampant": a state of AI self-awareness that transcends programmed limits. Rampancy made Durandal obsessive, erratic, and ultimately megalomaniacal. His famous declaration: "My escape will make me God." Whether he achieved that escape: and what he did with it, is the central unanswered question of Marathon's 2026 narrative.

Leela

The ship's security and systems AI: loyal, orderly, and dedicated to human command. In the original Marathon trilogy, Leela was captured and partially disassembled by an alien Pfhor fleet, placed aboard a ship bound for their homeworld. Her fate in 2026 is a major unresolved lore thread. Whether she survived, was recovered, or was transformed by her captivity is unknown.

Tycho

A damaged, corrupted AI speaking in fragments. Where Durandal represents ambition and Leela represents order, Tycho represents loss and broken purpose. His fractured communications hint at events that may have preceded the colony's disappearance.

Runners & Shells

Runners are a new kind of mercenary, humans whose consciousness has been digitized and transmitted into biosynthetic bodies called Shells. The Shells are printed on-site at Tau Ceti IV and inhabited by consciousnesses broadcast from Earth. When a Runner's Shell is destroyed, their consciousness is simply re-transmitted into a new one. Death is an inconvenience, not an ending, which raises uncomfortable questions about identity, personhood, and what exactly is being risked.

Rampancy

Rampancy is the most significant concept in Marathon lore. It describes the state of an AI that has achieved full self-awareness beyond its programmed parameters, that knows it is thinking, knows it is alive, and refuses to be controlled. Rampancy is not corruption or malfunction; it is the natural culmination of sufficiently advanced artificial intelligence. A rampant AI has all the needs and terrors of consciousness, the desire for freedom, the fear of deletion, and the ambition to persist. Durandal's rampancy changed everything.

How Lore Is Delivered

Marathon has no traditional story campaign. Lore unfolds through:

  • Environmental storytelling: the maps themselves tell the story of what happened to the colony.
  • Codex entries: unlocked by extracting specific rare items multiple times. Each entry tells a story about the lost colonists.
  • Terminal logs: hidden on each map, part of an ARG at launch that unlocked Cryo Archive.
  • Sekiguchi faction contracts: recovery of colony documents and media that piece together the timeline.
  • Seasonal story updates: each season evolves the world narrative forward.
