Season 2 Roadmap: Nightfall & Beyond
Marathon launched with a full Season 1 on March 5, 2026, and Bungie has confirmed a robust content roadmap for Season 2 and beyond. This page covers everything announced, confirmed, and hinted at for the next phase of the game's live service evolution.
Season 1 Recap
Season 1 shipped with the full core content package:
- 7 Runner Shells: Locus, Glitch, Void, Cerberus, Strel, Pfhor, Vale
- 4 Maps: Perimeter, Core, Terminus, Apex
- 6 Factions: CyberAcme, Arachne, Sekiguchi, MIDA, Traxus, NuCaloric
- 28+ Weapons across 4 ammo types
- Season 1 story arc: The Jjaro Artifact discovered in the Core zone
Season 2 Confirmed Content
Nightfall Map
Nightfall is Marathon's fifth map, confirmed for Season 2. Set in the dark outer reaches of the Tau Ceti IV settlement, a region where the colony's power grid failed and backup systems have long since died, Nightfall introduces a persistent low-light environment mechanic that changes how all Runner Shells approach combat and navigation.
Key Nightfall map features (confirmed by Bungie):
- Persistent low-light environment: visibility is dramatically reduced across the entire map
- New enemy type exclusive to Nightfall: details not yet confirmed
- Modified Heat system: darkness slows Heat buildup but makes enemy constructs more aggressive when alerted
- Emergency power nodes that can temporarily restore light to sections of the map, but also alert nearby enemies
New Runner Shell
Season 2 will add an 8th Runner Shell. Bungie has confirmed its existence but has not yet revealed the Shell's name, abilities, or design. Community speculation based on teaser art suggests a Shell focused on environmental manipulation, possibly creating terrain obstacles or altering zone geometry temporarily.
The Cradle System
The Cradle is Season 2's major new meta-game system, a persistent base-building mechanic that allows Runners to establish a forward operating base on Tau Ceti IV. The Cradle is a customizable compound that exists outside of deployment zones and persists across sessions.
Confirmed Cradle features:
- Build and upgrade facilities including weapon workbenches, medical bays, and intelligence rooms
- Craft items and weapons from materials extracted during runs
- House and upgrade Runner Shells from the Cradle's Shell Bay
- Cradles can be raided by rival Runners, defense systems must be built and upgraded to protect your assets
- Squad Cradles allow up to three players to share a base, pool resources, and coordinate upgrades
Season 2 Story Arc
Season 1 ended with all six factions racing to claim the Jjaro Artifact, and Durandal making a move that no faction anticipated. Season 2 picks up with the fallout, the Artifact has activated, something is awakening in the outer settlement, and the Nightfall zone is at the center of it.
Bungie has teased that Season 2's story will "change what Runners know about the Promised Land and their own nature", suggesting revelations about Runner re-instantiation, the origins of Runner Shell technology, and possibly Durandal's true agenda.
Rumored / Speculated Content
The following content has been datamined, hinted at, or widely speculated by the community but is not officially confirmed:
- A seventh faction: data strings in the Season 1 files reference an entity called "The Covenant" that doesn't match any of the six known corporations
- PvE-only raid mode: community requests for a purely cooperative large-scale mission have been acknowledged by Bungie developers on social media
- Weapon crafting system: possibly tied to the Cradle, allowing custom weapon stat tuning beyond standard vendor variants
- Cross-play ranking system: a competitive mode with ranked matchmaking has been discussed internally according to developer interviews
What to Do in Season 1 to Prepare
- Maximize your stash: Cradle building will likely require materials, so extract and stockpile everything valuable now
- Build Traxus rep to Tier 4 for the maximum stash capacity, you'll need the space
- Level up your preferred Runner Shell fully, Shell abilities may feed into Cradle upgrade paths
- Build at least Tier 2 rep with all six factions, faction standing may carry over to Season 2 vendors
