The VK-7 Assault Rifle is the definitive general-purpose weapon in Marathon — an S-tier assault rifle that balances damage, range, accuracy, and magazine size in proportions that make it effective in virtually every combat scenario the game presents. If a runner could carry only one weapon and had to be prepared for any situation from corridor clearing to long-range engagements on Apex rooftops, the VK-7 would be the answer. It is the most commonly used weapon among veteran runners precisely because its only weakness is having no specific strength: it is excellent at everything without being the best at anything.

The VK-7's 30-round magazine and comfortable recoil pattern make it forgiving for newer runners while its damage profile scales well into mid-to-late game content. Against Enforcers, the VK-7 can strip shields with sustained fire before switching to headshot targeting when the shield is down. Against rival runners, its versatility means it is never the wrong choice regardless of the engagement distance.
